In November 1929, a month after the stock market crashed and the Great Depression ensued, my grandparents met and fell in love at Dehoney’s Dance Hall in Portland, Ore. My grandma, then 20, danced all night with my curly-haired grandpa who had just hitchhiked his way from Chicago. They were married five years later.

A year and a half ago I packed my car and drove 1,400 miles from Chicago to Salt Lake City. I got a new job, moved into a new apartment, tore off my Land of Lincoln license plates, switched insurance and bank accounts, and eventually developed a social network and rolodex of contacts.
